Welton made the trip over to the Mendips to Wells and with a make shift team due to injuries and non availability, the fourteen who played can hold their heads high as this was an impressive performance in the sweltering heat. Welton took the lead after 11 minutes following good play from Mark Rowlands who found Mark Reynolds who made no mistake with his effort. Wells equalised on the half hour but Welton continued to impress and were rewarded with a second goal again from Reynolds. The second half saw Welton under the cosh but they held on till the 75th minute when the referee awarded Wells a controversial penalty, to say the least that was duly converted. After that Welton heads dropped and Wells scored twice more to come away with a flattering 4-2 victory. Clayton Dando in the Welton goal had an outstanding match pulling off a series of fine saves.

Important letter to the local press from the Chairman

As your readers are aware for the last couple of years Welton Rovers Football Club has been trying to complete negotiations with the now defunct Norton Radstock Town Council over the renewal of the lease for Welton Rovers. These negotiations have failed to resolve this matter; I might add through no fault of the club, and with the Council now departed the club finds itself out on a limb. Therefore with the local elections coming up on May 5th I am calling an open meeting to be held at the Welton Rovers Clubhouse North Road at 7.30pm on Tuesday 19th April to discuss the Lease issue and also the future of the Recreational ground itself. All candidates standing for election to Midsomer Norton Town Council have been written to individually and have been invited to attend. I would also extend that invitation to supporters of the club and any other persons who have an interest in the future of the area to attend.

Chairman Welton Rovers Football Club.

Longwell Green Report

Welton Rovers 2-0 Longwell Green Sports

On a freezing cold Tuesday evening at West Clewes Welton recorded only their third league win of the season and their first since November 13th when they beat fellow relegation strugglers Longwell Green Sports.

With an icy cold wind behind them Welton completely dominated the first half piling pressure on the visitors defence with efforts from Steve Bridges and Ashley Lewis going close. The breakthrough came after 25 minutes when, after a succession of corners for Welton, the ball was met by Andy Forward and his header was cleared off the line and the ball fell to Greg Dando who was 15 yards out and he made no mistake as he drilled his shot through a melee of players and into the net. Six minutes later Welton got their second when a firmly hit shot from Mark Rowlands on the right was headed into his own net by central defender Mark Summers.

The second half saw the visitors go all out to score but the Welton defence marshalled by Carl Stone and Greg Dando held firm and the one chance the visitors had was brilliantly saved one handed by Welton keeper Andy King. The final whistle saw scenes of jubilation from Welton players and supporters alike as the three points have been a long time coming.

Well played Welton.

Open Letter from the Chairman

I am writing in my position as Chairman of Welton Rovers Football Club and wish to bring to the attention of the local community concerns that have arisen in connection with the ground at the Midsomer Norton Recreation Ground. As many of you will know  Welton Rovers was founded in 1887 and are one of the founding members of the Western League. Football was an outlet for the local miners after a hard shift at the coal face and Welton Rovers was that outlet. In the 1922-23 season the club had financial difficulties and the ground at West Clewes was sold to the Miners Welfare thanks to the generosity of local miners contributions and the Club has continued to play on the site ever since then.

I was Chairman of the Club from 1977 to 1987 and in 1982 we successfully negotiated a 28 year lease with the then Wansdyke District Council for Welton to continue to play at the Midsomer Norton Recreation Ground despite opposition in certain quarters and proposed other uses including one to build a multistorey car park on the site. I left in 1987 and moved away to Canada but returned in 2006 and became Chairman of Welton Rovers again in 2007.

For the last three years I and other Board members have been in dialogue with the soon to be defunct Norton Radstock Town Council over the renewal of the lease for Welton Rovers. We have lobbied Councillors at a Council meeting over the lease issue and at a meeting of the Norton Radstock Town Council held on the 8th February 2010 it was resolved and minuted that the term of the new lease be 20 years and that the finalisation of the lease be delegated to the Acting Town Clerk once confirmation has been received from the Solicitor in respect of the Charity Commission requirements.

Since that date and despite letters from us to the Town Council and contact with the acting clerk on many occasions we had  heard nothing as to how this matter is progressing until a letter arrived recently stating that this matter will now have to be resolved by the new Midsomer Norton Council?.

Is this the way to treat an established Midsomer Norton club and all the local people who support it. I find it amazing that other Football Clubs in the area appear to have had their leases renewed by the Council without this delay. I ask the question why does Welton Rovers appear to be penalised. Is there a hidden agenda?

I know I speak on behalf of supporters and officials of the club when I say that this delay had caused extreme frustration to all concerned and has hindered our plans to improve the facilities at the Midsomer Norton Recreation ground. Our biggest benefactor would be with a FA grant but we cannot apply for without a long term lease being in place. All connected with Welton offer their services voluntarily at no cost to the local rate payers.

In conclusion I cannot emphasis strongly enough that Welton Rovers Football Club is the Football Club that represents Midsomer Norton, we draw on local players and supporters and are a big part of the local Community so come on Councillors sort this matter out.

I am so frustrated by this lack of action by our elected representatives that maybe the only way forward for Welton Rovers and the Recreation Ground is to be a Local Councillor.

 Next Weeks Fixtures

On Tuesday evening Welton make the short trip to Radstock for the rearranged local derby which was postponed at Christmas. Kick off is at 7.30pm and it would be great to see as many of the Green Army as possible at Southfields for this much anticipated match. Next Saturday Welton are at home to Bishop Sutton whilst the Reserves travel to Imperial F.C

Weekend Roundup

New player manager Nick Beaverstock took control of his first game in charge for Welton and saw his side go down 2-0 to Street. Welton produced a gutsy performance in difficult circumstances and the cause wasn't helped by a nasty injury to Hayden Watts  just before halftime that saw the player taken to hospital by ambulance with an ankle injury.

All connected with Welton wish Haydon a speedy recovery and our best wishes are with him and his family.

The Reserves gained a valuable point with a 1-1 draw against Cutters Fridays Reserves.

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE BOARD OF WELTON ROVERS

Welton Rovers Football Club manager Mark Leaney has left the club by mutual consent and the Board of Welton Rovers want to put on record their thanks to Mark for all his hard work having taken over last summer just before the start of the season when Welton found themselves in difficult circumstances without a manager and without many senior players left from the previous successful campaign.

Chairman of Welton Rovers Maurice Down has approached Welton senior player, Nick Beaverstock who has agreed to take on the manager’s role till the end of the season and his assistant will be another senior player Andy Catley.

Down said “This is a daunting task for both Nick and Andy to take on but I feel with their vast experience of Western League football and senior football in the region they will be up for the challenge and will be able to change the fortunes of the club and turn around the position that the club currently finds itself in. As a Club we accept that we are in a precarious position in the league and we feel that by making this change now we give ourselves an outside chance of survival in the top flight of the Western League. The club will look to the future and to the star of next season with a permanent manager in place. As Chairman I do not want to be placed in the position I found myself in at the end of last season when I felt particularly let down by certain individuals within the local football fraternity. The trauma of that caused me to stand down as Chairman, but I remained a board member, but I now feel revitalised and have been reappointed Chairman a position I am honoured to fill”

Sherborne Result

Welton went down 2-0 at Sherborne with a disappointing performance that saw the hosts two goals up at halftime and in truth it could have been more. It summed up Welton's evening when, with ten minutes to go, Welton were awarded a penalty and up stepped sub Craig Mullen only to fire his spot kick high and wide off the mark. Not a good evening at the office for Welton Rovers.

The Reserves lost 2-1 at Shepton, all the goals coming in the first fifteen minutes of the game.

Saturday Round up

Welton can count themselves very unlucky not to have come away with at least a point against second place Bishop Sutton. Hayden Watts opened the scoring for Welton after ten minutes when he finished off good play from Steve Bridges. Minutes later Watts was so unlucky to see his brilliant shot thump against the inside of the Sutton post and fly out. The home side pulled one back before half time. The second half saw Welton press but just couldn't make the vital breakthrough and Sutton broke out of defence to score the winner.

Saturdays games

Welton's game at Bishop Sutton is definitely ON, Welton Reserves home fixture against Westfield is Off.

Larkhall Result

Welton lost 1-0 to high flying Larkhall Athletic at a cold West Clewes. Welton were the dominant force in the first half with Andy Forward and James Billing going close with efforts. Nat Auckland scored a well executed goal in the 35th minute with a superb glancing header that gave Courtney Redwood no chance. The visitors were reduced to 10 men just before halftime when their captain Jonny Davoille received two yellow cards in the space of a minute. Welton really didn't get out of the blocks in the second half and it was Larkhall who looked the more likely to score and Welton's frustration grew and Forward received a straight red card following a clash with a Larkhall player.

Points shared with Barnstaple.

Welton drew 3-3 with Barnstaple in a cracking game at West clewes. This was the best attacking play by Welton that has been seen at West Clewes this season. Unfortunately defensive frailties surfaced again in the second half allowing the visitors to pull back a 3-1 defeat into a draw. Weltons goals were scored by Craig Mullen (2) and youngster Jamie Jordan who had an impressive game. It was good to see Nick Beaverstock back in the centre of Weltons defence.

Manor Farm Result

Welton lost 3-1 to Bristol Manor Farm at West Clewes on a cold Tuesday evening, I know its no excuse but that well known saying that when you are down your luck deserts you is certainly true in Weltons case. Just before half time Welton had a really good shout that the ball had crossed the Manor Farm goal line, not given, straight from the goal kick the visitors went up the other end and scored. Welton equalised early in the second half, good throw from Courtney Redwood found Steve Bridges, he raced up the left flank, delivered a pin point cross that was fired in by Jamie Jordan. As Welton pressed Manor Farm scored twice, one took a wicked deflection, no points for Welton again. Disappointing for the team and the loyal supporters who turned out on such a cold night.

Match Report

Welton Rovers 1-4 Willand Rovers

Before the start of the game there was a minutes silence for legendary Welton stalwart John Dury, (JJ) to his friends, who died suddenly last Saturday.

The first half saw the high flying visitors press for an early goal but the Welton defence looked strong and Courtney Redwood in the Welton goal made a couple of good saves. The more the half went on Willand were becoming more and more frustrated and Welton took advantage and a free kick from Steve Bridges found James Billing in the area and his goal bound header was tipped over the bar by Brian Cann in the Willand goal. From the corner the ball dropped into the six yard box and Andy Forward got a foot to the ball and it went over the line to give Welton a surprise lead. However the joy of the supporters was short lived as the visitors attacked and new signing for Welton Carl Stone was harshly adjudged  to have brought down a Willand player and referee Bryant awarded a penalty which Dean Stamp duly dispatched.

Welton had a disastrous start to the second half when defensive frailties allowed first Shaun Goff and then Stamp to score within minutes of the restart. This knocked the stuffing out of Welton and the visitors wrapped things up just before the final whistle when Joel Hawes got Willands fourth.

Message from Mark Leaney

Welton boss Mark Leaney has admitted that the Western League fixture list has been kind to him as he builds up for tomorrows FA Vase match with Wessex League Verwood Town. Welton have only played two games since he took over the reigns but he said " Its been very useful to have some time without a game, its given us time to build up the squad and get the training in and the fitness levels up. All the people I've signed are players I already knew, the atmosphere is brilliant, the people at Welton have been really accommodating and they recognise that they have got to be patient"

Mark has brought in Mike Charlton and Andy Sparks from Wells, Andy Forward from Bridgwater and goalkeeper Courtney Redwood from Paulton. Nathan Loader, Ryan Trowbridge and Matt Parsons have joined from Frome together with Jake Antell from Radstock and Craig Rimmer from Wellington.

Next Weeks fixtures

Special thanks to Midsomer Savouries in the High Street for supplying cakes to the Tea hut during match days.

Welton Res v Tunley

Welton went down 1-0 to near neighbours Tunley in a hard fought local derby played at West Clewes, Welton were a goal down after only 3 minutes when the defence failed to clear a loose ball and the Tunley attack punished the hesitation with a scrambled goal. Weltons cause wasn't helped when Greg Langridge was sent off by the referee after the goal was scored reducing the home side to ten men for 87 minutes. Despite this Welton can count themselves very unlucky as the ten men played their hearts out and created numerous chances and they were also up against a keeper who was on top form. Welton were awarded a penalty in the second half which was saved and the loose ball fell to a Welton player who then appeared to have been held back but no further penalty was awarded.

Reserves Match Report

In a game played in near monsoon conditions it was a credit to both sides that saw them produce an entertaining game which was well refereed which resulted in the points being shared in a 2-2 draw. Purnell Sports Reserves took the lead in the first minute when Welton failed to clear a corner and the visitors scrambled the ball over the line. Midway through the half Welton equalised when James Cooper finished off a fine attacking move from Welton and just before halftime Welton took the lead when Craig Marsh pounced on poor defending and his shot on the turn flew into the Purnell net. The second half saw both sides still go all out in awful conditions but as tiredness crept in, the visitors equalised through another set piece. A corner from the right was met at the near post and glanced into the net as the Welton defenders could only stand and watch.

Next Weeks fixtures

The Reserves are in league action on Wednesday 25th August at West Clewes when Purnell Sports Reserves are the visitors kick off 7.30pm, and next Saturday the first team are without a fixture, but the Reserves are home to Tunley for a local derby kick off 3pm.

First Team manager appointed.

Following interviews that took place in the early part of this week the Board of Directors of Welton Rovers Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Leaney as First Team Manager. Mark comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience of the Western League having previously managed Wellington and Wells City and I know everybody connected with Welton will wish him every success for the new season.

Message from the Board

The Board of Directors of Welton Rovers would like to put on record their appreciation for all the hard work that Anthony Dando (Spooner) and Greg Langridge have done in the build up to the new season. Greg and Spooner have taken training on a number of occasions and ably assisted Cats in the Pre Season training sessions. Not only that, with their local knowledge  and contacts they have brought in a number of local players to the club for which we are grateful, The Board had no hesitation in appointing Greg and Spooner as joint Reserve Team Managers and we wish them well and every success for the coming season.

Report from Welton Rovers Football Club

Welton has enjoyed a tremendous last few years of success under managers Chris Mountford and Mark Harrington respectively, resulting in last season finishing fifth in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division and winning the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time in the Clubs history, under manager Mark Harrington. At the conclusion of last season Mark choose to leave and go to pastures news and Welton wish him well. It was always going to be difficult for the squad that Mark had assembled to remain together and the fact is that many members of that squad have decided to go elsewhere and leave Welton. The Board of Directors of Welton Rover together with the supporters wish them well in whatever standard of football they archive. Since then Welton have been actively seeking a First Team Manager to take over from Mark. A number of persons have registered an interest and have been sounded out and interviewed. Last Wednesday an individual agreed to take the job as first team manager only to resign on Saturday, a week before the start of the season. Therefore the Directors of Welton Rovers are still looking for a first team manager and this coming week two applicants will be interviewed for that position. A special mention must be made to senior player Andrew Catley (Cats) who enjoyed last season’s success but has remained with us and been an absolute rock. He has carried out pre season training, ably assisted by Mark Brain, and has held it together. Many players have turned up for training and have signed on for all levels of football for the coming season that is available at Welton Rovers, so well done Cats and thanks.

The coming season for Welton can only be described as a challenge and our aim is to secure our Premier League status and despite the pre season difficulties, as in life when you think it’s the pits life kicks you, things happen, and off we go again and things can only and will get better for Welton Rovers Football Club.

Yate Match Report

Welton Rovers 1-5 Yate Town

This was an excellent pre season friendly at West Clewes in front of a large crowd that saw all 22 players who turned up for Welton being given the opportunity to play against their higher league opponents. Clayton Dando in the Welton goal was called upon early on and he produced a fine save to deny the visitors an early lead. Welton responded and a terrific effort from James Cooper saw his volley on the turn cleared off the Yate line by a defenders boot. The visitors opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Mark Hughes shot in from close range and just before halftime Russ Church got the visitors second.

The second half saw Yate take control of the game with their extra fitness and pace and goals from ex Paulton player Rob Cousins, ex Welton player Chris Lewis and Dale Dempsy saw them take a five goal lead. Welton kept plugging away and were rewarded with a late consolation goal that saw Craig Marsh bundle the ball into the net following good work by Anthony Dibble. All in all a good work out for Welton.

Saturdays Match

On Saturday Welton entertain Yate Town in a pre season friendly at West Clewes, kick off is 3pm, so come along and support the team through these challenging times.

Melksham Friendly

Welton went down 2-1 in the first of their pre season friendly fixtures, it was good to see so many players turn up and have a run out. It was also great to see last seasons first team players, Craig Coles, Nick Beaverstock, Mark Rowlands and Steve Bridges all make the effort to turn up and play for Welton. Welton had the better of the first half and were unlucky to not go in at the interval with a lead as there were several chances created. The second half saw both sides ring the changes and Melksham scored twice in quick succession but Welton pulled one back through Craig Mansell but just couldn't find the equaliser.

Change of venue for Mondays Friendly against Melksham

Mondays friendly game against Melksham has been switched to Bath University pitch were Team Bath used to play. Kick off remains the same at 7.30pm.

Press Release and Statement from the Chairman Mr Maurice Down

It is with great regret that Welton Rovers Football Club announces, with immediate effect, the resignation of the First Team Manager Mark Harrington. Marks decision came as a great shock to the club especially having just finished a truly memorable season with Welton Rovers.

We are hoping to keep the nucleus of the team together, especially the local players and therefore we will be looking for a local management team to continue with the good work that was achieved by Mark, on and off the field during the last two seasons, which created a special atmosphere that ran throughout the whole club.

Whatever Mark does in the future, football or otherwise he will always be welcome at Welton Rovers Football Club where he remains held in very high esteem.”
